What Is MCP, and How Can It Help Your Website?

People now ask AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude before they visit a website. MCP lets those assistants read your site's real information and answer accurately. Here's what it is, in plain language, and how company, real estate and car websites can use it.

More and more people don't start with Google anymore. They open ChatGPT, Claude or another AI assistant and ask: "Which developers have apartments for sale in New Cairo?", "What's the price of this car with the top trim?", "Does this company do mobile apps?"

The assistant answers anyway. The question is whether its answer comes from your website, or from an old article, a competitor, or a guess. MCP is what decides that.

What is MCP, in simple terms?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to a website or system and read its information directly, in a clear and organized way.

Think of it like this: your website was built for people. It has pages, images and menus that a human can browse. MCP adds a second door built for AI assistants. Behind that door, your site says: "Here are my projects. Here are my prices. Here is what I offer. Ask me anything."

Another simple comparison is a phone charger. Years ago every phone had its own charger. Today one USB-C cable works with almost everything. MCP does the same for AI: you build it once, and it works with ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and any assistant that supports the standard.

The idea behind it

Without MCP, an AI assistant knows about your business only what it happened to read on the internet, and that may be months old or simply wrong. It might quote an old price, mention a project you finished years ago, or recommend a competitor because it found more information about them.

With MCP, the assistant asks your website directly and gets the current, correct answer. You decide what it can see. Public information like your services, projects and listings can be open to everyone. Private information like customer messages or sales figures stays closed, and only you can reach it.

How site owners benefit

A company website

A company profile site exists to answer one question: "Is this company right for me?" With MCP:

  • When someone asks an AI assistant about your company, it describes your services, your experience and your past work accurately.
  • When someone asks "Who can build a booking system in Riyadh?", the assistant can find you and point to a real project you did.
  • Your team can ask an assistant "Which projects did we do in the healthcare sector?" and get the list in seconds, without digging through the dashboard.

A real estate website

Real estate buyers ask very specific questions, which is exactly where AI assistants shine.

  • A buyer asks "Three-bedroom apartments under 5 million with a garden view in Sheikh Zayed." The assistant searches your actual listings and shows the units that match, with their real prices.
  • Availability stays accurate. If a unit is sold, the assistant stops recommending it.
  • Your sales team can ask "How many inquiries did we get this week about the new compound?" or "Which units are still available in phase two?" and get an answer immediately.
  • For multi-currency sites, the assistant can show prices in the visitor's currency, based on your own data.

A car dealership or brand website

  • A customer asks "What's the difference between the two trims of this model, and what's the price?" The assistant reads your official specs and prices instead of a forum post.
  • Questions about installments, warranty, branch locations and test drives get answered from your own information.
  • Your team can ask "Which models are out of stock?" or "How many test-drive requests came in this month?" without opening reports.

Online stores, clinics, hotels and more

The same idea works for almost any business. A store can let assistants check products and stock. A hotel can share room types and offers. A clinic can share its doctors, specialties and working hours. If customers ask questions about it, MCP can help answer them.

What you gain

  • Visibility in AI answers. Being found by AI assistants is becoming as important as ranking on Google. This is often called GEO, generative engine optimization.
  • Accurate information. Assistants stop guessing about your prices, products and services.
  • Time saved for your team. Questions that needed a report or a developer can be answered by just asking.
  • Full control. You decide what's public, what's private, and whether an assistant can only read or also make changes.

Is it safe?

Yes, when it's built properly. A good setup follows a few simple rules:

  • Public information is separated from private information, and private access needs a login.
  • Start with reading only. The assistant can look, but not change anything.
  • Anything that changes your site, like adding content, is saved as a draft for you to review first.
  • Nothing can be deleted through it.

A real example: this website

The site you're reading this on has two MCP connections. One is public: any AI assistant can use it to learn about my services, my projects and my articles. The other is private: only I can use it, to review drafts, read contact messages and check figures.

In practice, I ask an assistant "How many projects do I have for each technology?" and get the answer in seconds. I asked it to review all my project descriptions and it found which ones needed more detail, plus a typo I had missed. This article itself was first saved to my dashboard as a draft through the same connection.

Do you need one?

If your customers ask questions before they buy, book or contact you, and almost all of them do, then yes, MCP is worth considering. It doesn't replace your website. It makes sure that when people ask AI about your business, the answer comes from you.
